Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park inauguration today

Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park located on Boat Basin will be inaugurated on Wednesday (today) by Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Senator Almas Perveen.

Party sources disclosed that the decision to have Senator Parveen to inaugurate the park was taken on the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari who wished that a party worker should be handed the task. Senator Parveen has long been associated with the PPP and started as a worker in the party. Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, his cabinet members and prominent citizens have been invited as guests to the inaugural ceremony.

Work on Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park started two year ago. Located on around 50 acres of land situated at Boat Basin, Clifton, the park was built under Zardari’s Green Karachi programme and is the most expensive park in Pakistan with a sum of Rs. one billion having been spent on it. However, to date, half of the park remains incomplete and yet another two million would be spent on the construction of this portion.

Officials confirmed that the cost of one tree planted in the park is Rs45000 and hundred of such trees have been planted in the park. Most of the decorative items have been imported from China. PPP’s women wing chief, MNA, Faryal Taplur, who is also the sister of Zardari, has supervised the construction and purchasing of the beautification items installed in the park.

Though one half of the portion was completed six months ago, President Zardari was invited more then four times to inaugurate the park. However, arrangements for the inauguration were postponed at the last minute as every time the president changed his mind, official concerned informed.

Musharraf attack accused refused bail

RAWALPINDI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) has rejected the bail application moved by an accused allegedly involved in a suicide attack on former president Pervez Musharraf, and adjourned the proceedings for a week.

The proceedings of the case of the suicide attack on Musharraf were resumed in ATC-I, where Judge Malik Akram Awan rejected the bail application of the accused, Rana Faqir Hussain, saying the crimes he was accused of were of a serious nature.

Civil Lines police station arrested Faqir in 2005, charging him of driving one of the three explosive-laden vehicles deployed to hit Musharraf‘s convoy. Musharraf escaped the attempt on his life, but 15 people, including 3 policemen, were killed. Meanwhile, Judge Akram Awan convicted an accused, Umer Adeel Khan, in another case regarding a suicide attack at RA Bazaar Rawalpindi and sought witnesses from the prosecution on July 19. tahir rashid

If ever a video made a phone look like it belonged with the Park Avenue crowd, it is this little clip for the Nokia N9. One caveat about the video-the OS you see on the phone, the S60, will not be on the unit when it ships. Last week, Nokia confirmed that after the N8, Symbian software will not be used to power any more of the Nseries. Click here more news

Pakistan have had an injury scare involving their captain Shahid Afridi on the second day of the tour game against Kent. Afridi, clutching his back on the way to the dressing room at lunch, has what he said is a side strain and will visit a clinic tomorrow morning to ascertain the full extent of the injury.

"I just had a minor side strain," Afridi confirmed to Cricinfo, adding that there was no cause for serious concern. Earlier in the morning he had appeared comfortable during fielding drills and played touch football with his team-mates. However, Afridi did not return after lunch and only took the field towards the end of the Kent innings for a couple of overs. He hasn`t had much of an impact on the tour game, batting only six balls for a duck in the first innings. Click here more news

Nawaz Sharif blames government for mismanagement in scathing attack

Islamabad: Former premier Nawaz Sharif launched a bitter attack on the government Tuesday, blaming it for economic mismanagement, rampant corrupt ion and confrontation with the judiciary.

Addressing a news conference in Lahore after a high-level meeting of his main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), he said his party would not remain a “silent spectator” and would play its role for containing the overall deterioration without upsetting the democratic system.

He demanded a thorough debate in the parliament on the conditions prevailing in the country in order to evolve a national strategy to reverse the drift into chaos.

Sharif once again denounced what he called attempts by the government to “buy loyalties of lawyers” and turn them against the judiciary by doling out financial grants to bars in Punjab province and other areas through its law minister. A number of bar associations had refused such handouts, he said and praised their stand recalling the struggle waged by the lawyer community and the PML-N that led to the restoration of the independent judiciary in March last year.

He said since the transition from dictatorship to democratic rule after the February 2008 general election, his party had taken care that the system was not destabilized, though it had to face criticism that it was acting as a friendly opposition to the Pakistan People's Party government.

“The economy is going down the drain and the situation in the country is rapidly deteriorating because of misrule and corruption. We cannot watch this deterioration silently; the direction has to be changed,” he said.

Sharif said courts in France have concluded that the Agosta submarine deal with Pakistan during the PPP government had involvement kickbacks. He said it was not difficult to pinpoint culprits and demanded that necessary action be taken.

He said when his party was in power the country's economy was flourishing, the value of Pakistani rupee was more than the Indian currency and the country did not have to beg loans from others.

The opposition leader's onslaught came amid ongoing tussle between the executive and the judiciary and emerging prospect of many federal and provincial lawmakers losing their seats as a result of a scandal over alleged fake educational degrees of parliamentarians.

Around 10 legislators belonging to PML-N, PPP and PML-Q have already quit in the wake of proceedings in courts on challenges to authenticity of their degrees they had furnished to contest the 2008 elections when graduation was a pre-requisite for participation in parliamentary polls.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is currently engaged in a process to verify degrees of hundreds of legislators, following a Supreme Court order to the Election Commission to initiate action against lawmakers whose degrees were found to be spurious.

Political analysts say if a large number of lawmakers stood disqualified such a situation could warrant holding of fresh elections instead of filling vacant seats through by-polls. The two-year old government has dismissed suggestions of mid-term elections.

Asked at his news conference about PML-N stance over the issue, Sharif said his party was watching the developing situation and would take a decision at the appropriate time.

Google recently used its right to remove an installed app from Android phones and the Android Market to get rid of an application that was basically a Trojan Horse. Designed to appear like an app with pictures from the upcoming Twilight Eclipse movie, the app was listed by Jon Oberheide from a security startup, Scio Security. The real purpose of the download was to expose a security flaw that would allow someone with an evil mind to retrieve executable code without the users permission. Click here more news

It was more gloom and doom than `Boom Boom` for star one-day batsman Shahid Afridi after Pakistan`s enigmatic captain suffered a six-ball duck on the opening day of their second tour game against Kent in Canterbury.

Instead of watching Afridi dispatch the ball to all parts, Kent and Pakistan supporters had to contend themselves with a workmanlike 153 from Umar Akmal as Pakistan recovered from a sticky start of 53 for 3 to rack up 360 all out in temperatures more akin to Gujranwala than the Garden of England.

Benazir Bhutto inscribed into law by NA vote

ISLAMABAD: In a historic move, the National Assembly inscribed Benazir Bhutto’s name into law by its vote on Monday, unanimously passing a pro-poor bill after the main opposition party gave up a blocking amendment amid “long live” slogans for the assassinated leader.

However, the Benazir Income Support Programme Bill, based on a presidential ordinance already in operation, will need approval by Senate to become a permanent law.

An amendment in the name of the opposition PML-N’s 87 members had sought to rename the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) provided in the bill as Qaumi (national) Income Support Programme but was greeted with “no, no” chants and slogans of “long live Shaheed Benazir Bhutto” from members of the ruling PPP, and was withdrawn after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani called for giving a legislative recognition to the former prime minister’s sacrifice for democracy.

The programme under the ordinance too was named after the former PPP leader and twice-prime minister who was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack on Dec 27, 2007, outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh park after she had addressed an election campaign rally there.

But the National Assembly’s was a rare legislative vote to inscribe a political leader’s name into a law.

PML-N member Zahid Hamid, who moved the amendment, said his party had “the greatest respect” for Ms Bhutto and her sacrifice and that her legacy should be honoured by good governance rather than by naming roads, hospitals and airports after her.

But his argument was opposed by Dr Donya Aziz of the PML-Q who saw “nothing wrong” in giving such posthumous honour to Ms Bhutto.

The prime minister said BISP was Ms Bhutto’s own idea and it was working well for the past two and half years without any fingers raised about its impartial functioning to provide financial help and other social and safety net measures to economically distressed persons and families.

“In view of the prime minister’s remarks, we withdraw the amendment,” Hamid said, paving the way for a unanimous passage of the bill when it was put to voice vote by Speaker Fehmida Mirza.

Musharraf will lead Pak against 'tsunami of corruption'

A key aide of Pervez Musharraf has said that the former Pakistan President is determined to lift the country from the prevalent chaos and the 'tsunami of corruption'.

"Musharraf would return soon and would fix the date for his return himself. He is committed to going back to Pakistan," The News quoted Qureshi, Musharraf's spokesperson and a key strategist, as saying.

"The decision is up to him, he will go back soon and you will see him participating in elections and leading the people against the tsunami of corruption unleashed on Pakistan," he added.

Qureshi also said that the launch of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) and the party's membership drive have received remarkable response, and emphasized that political leaders from national parties have welcomed the launch and assured their support.

He was quick to highlight that APML is not just another addition to the long list of political parties.

"APML is determined get Pakistan's true potential recognized in the world as was the case under Pervez Musharraf. Our agenda is crystal clear. We want to serve Pakistan, not our personal interests," Qureshi said.

"Corruption, plunder and nepotism have forced Pakistanis to think hard about their future and they are not satisfied with the pace and nature of the current order. They are vying for change," he added. (ANI)

National reconstruction need of hour: Nawaz

Lahore—Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has expressed concern over indifferent attitude of the PPP led government and said formulation of national reconstruction is need of the hour.

He said this while addressing a consultative meeting of the PML-N held at his Raiwind residence on Monday. Among others the meeting was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif, Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Ahsan Iqbal, Pervaiz Rashid and Sartaj Aziz.

The meeting discussed country’s political and economic situation and took some important decisions, sources said.

Addressing the meeting, Nawaz Sharif said that those who are criticising them should see their own misdeeds and apprise the nation about their programme and agenda.

He said that irresponsible speeches were delivered at the time of distribution of cheques of grants to the bar associations that made the whole process controversial. “Where were these grants when bar associations all over the country were struggling for independence of judiciary,” he questioned?

Nawaz said that no steps are being taken to correct wrongs committed during the last 10 years. He said that PML-N is duty bound to keep close eye on government affairs and also play its due role as opposition. He also called for adopting the policy of self accountability. “Failure could be converted into success through self accountability while nations that follow self accountability never fail,” he said. Nawaz further said that the PML-N had played heroic role for putting an end to dictatorship and we would lead the country to road to progress and prosperity with public support.
