Apple tablet The next it product?

Video

Lots of hype, hope centered around possible personal media devic

Yes, there is a lot of buzz — maybe too much for some and not enough for others — about Apple's expected tablet, which may be announced today. The reasons it's generating excitement vary, and it's not even clear whether everyone will want or need one — despite its Apple nameplate.

"There really is no demand for tablets per se," said James McQuivey, Forrester Research principal analyst. "That’s the challenge for Apple. They have to create a new category, and it can’t just be like the last time — in 2001, 2002 — when tablets were created and were viewed as productivity devices."

Those early tablets "were going to make us really effective at work," he said. "Heaven knows that’s not something we all care about when we wake up in the morning. What we do care about is, how are we going to spend our idle time? How are we going to keep our busy minds occupied with interesting and fun things?" such as movies, TV, music and reading newspapers and magazines. "That’s where the Apple tablet is going to forge new ground."

McQuivey recalls a recent conversation with "a semiconductor maker, who said, 'We think that tablets are going to be Web browsers first and media devices second.' And I said no, the future of Web browsing is media consumption, and if Apple can make consuming media feel as elegant and as straightforward on this tablet as they have on the iPhone in the past, I think they have a shot at it."

Apple, he said, "isn’t thinking" of tablets as "selling laptops without keyboards," as other manufacturers do; "Apple sees this as a personal media experience that they can create."

Varied pricing?
With a still-shaky economy, how likely is it that consumers will spend $500, $700 or $1,000 — all rumored prices for Apple's tablet — for either a 7- or 10-inch display? Indications are pricing will not be one-size-fits-all, which could make it more appealing to potential buyers.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless have been mentioned as the wireless carriers that may sell the tablet, at a subsidized cost, in exchange for a monthly data fee and two-year-service contract. Consumers who want to buy the tablet and use it as a stand-alone wireless device, relying on their home Wi-Fi service or hot spots at coffee shops and airports, would pay more for the tablet itself.

"I think we’re coming out of an economy that’s pretty difficult for a lot of people, and we’re seeing a lot of people pay less for premium channels on TV, cut their home phone cords — a lot of behaviors where they’re throwing away these monthly plans," said Dmitriy Molchanov, Yankee Group analyst. "I think it will be difficult for Apple to convince people to sign up for an additional plan."

The arrangement could be similar to what AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint have done with netbooks. The lightweight laptops are significantly less expensive, with most costing between $300 and $400 with no subsidy, and several are offered by carriers for around $200 with a contract.

Two recent surveys about an Apple tablet found that price does matter. ChangeWave Research, which surveyed 3,314 consumers this month, said there is "strong consumer interest" in an Apple tablet, and that 75 percent of those who are interested say they'd be "willing to pay $500 or more," and 37 percent say they would pay more than $700 for an Apple tablet.

Shopping site Retrevo.com's survey of 500 consumers found that 70 percent of them said they will not spend more than $700 for an Apple tablet. Also, 44 percent said they would not buy such a device if it requires a monthly data plan for Internet access.

"You need to realize, Apple’s goal isn’t to sell 20 million of these to the mass market this year," said McQuivey. "They’ll price for the 3 million people they hope will buy one this year," and drop the price over time to get more buyers, as they did with the iPod and later with the iPhone."

Different than netbooks, e-readers
Netbooks — and some of the tablets announced earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas — can offer Web surfing and video; why would Apple's tablet be different?

Tablets themselves are "more geared toward media consumption," said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for The NPD Group research firm. "People have discovered that the iPod Touch is a pretty handy device with broad functionality, even at home, and could benefit from a larger screen for watching videos and browsing the Web."

Still, he notes, "there are only a few usage scenarios that tablets are exceptionally well-suited for today — perched on the exercise bike rack or dangling off the headrest for rear-seat video."

Molchanov believes e-readers — which are becoming as plentiful as netbooks; almost everyone, it seems, is making one now — will continue to thrive even with an Apple tablet or other tablets in the marketplace.

Timing is 'so critical'
"Some people assume if you have an Apple tablet, you also won’t have an e-reader," he said. "I think that’s a misguided assumption. We’re seeing a lot of evidence that even if people who have a multipurpose device that can do a lot of different things, they really prefer a single-purpose device that can do one thing very well."

As examples, he cites digital cameras and digital music players. "People will always continue to buy digital cameras, even though they have cameras on their phones, and people will always buy MP3 players, dedicated to music playing, even though they have MP3 players on their phones as well," he said.

"The Apple tablet won't have a lot of the features of an e-reader, like an ePaper display. It will allow consumers to consume that e-book content, but I think consumers will really continue to buy e-readers considering the lower price points of those e-readers, and the fact that they're dedicated devices that do that one thing very well."

In a report this month, the Yankee Group said it forecasts 6 million e-book readers will be sold in 2010, with more than 3 million estimated to have been sold in 2009.

With an explosion of e-readers available, Apple's timing on the tablet is "so critical," said McQuivey.

"If they waited a year, it might be too late, he said. "There'd be 10 million people with e-readers who’d say, 'Eh, too late, I’m already stuck with this device. But now is the time for Apple to come in and say, 'Hold off on your e-reader purchases, guys, because we’re going to give you an e-reader that’s all that and more.”

'It' factor
Technology consultant Rob Enderle said that the consumer market is hungry for an ever-thinner, more portable device, and Apple's tablet may be it.

"Thin clients didn’t make it, PDAs didn’t make it, and while smartphones have made a significant amount of progress, they didn’t make it either," he wrote in a recent piece for IT Business Edge.

This city of ours is really strange:
it whispers at night
when we walk on the streets,
it beckons, and shows its wounds
as if they were the secrets of the heart.

Its windows are all shut;
its lanes silent;
its walls dead tired;
its doors sealed.
In houses only the corpses have
stayed on for years on rent.

Islamic Articles (Respecting our differences)

Imam Malik one day entered the Masjid after Asr. Towards the front of Masjid An-Nabawee he drew closer and sat down. Rasul Allah had commanded that anyone who enters the Masjid should not sit until he first prays 2 rakas as a salutation of the Masjid. Imam Malik was of the opinion however that Rasul Allah`s forbiddance of praying after Asr took precedence and so he would teach his students to not pray the tahiyyatul Masjid if they entered between the Asr and Maghrib time.

At that moment that Imam Malik sat down, a young boy had seen him sit without first praying the 2 raka`s of Tahiyyatul Masjid. The young boy scorned him, "Get up and pray 2 rakas!"

Imam Malik dutifully stood up once again and began praying the 2 rakas. The students sat stunned: What was going on? Had Imam Malik`s opinion changed?

After he had completed the salah, the students swarmed around and questioned his actions. Imam Malik said, "My opinion has not changed, nor have I gone back on what I taught you earlier. I merely feared that had I not prayed the 2 rakas as the young boy commanded, Allah may include me in the Ayah...

"And when it is said to them, `Bow (in prayer)`, they do not bow." - al mursalat 77/48.

Imam Ahmad held the opinion that eating camel meat nullifies ones Wudhu, an opinion that the majority of scholars differed from. Some students asked him, "If you find an Imam eating camel meat in front of you and - without first making Wudu - then leads the Salah, would you pray behind him?" Imam Ahmad replied, "Do you think I would not pray behind the likes of Imam Malik and Sa`eed ibn Al-Musayyab?"

Allah created humans with differences. It is the law of creation. Different tongues, different colors, different cultures...all that on the outside. On the inside, humans were created with many degrees of knowledge, intellect, and comprehension of concepts. This is all a sign of Allah`s all encompassing power to do whatever He wills:

"And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors: verily in that are signs for those who know." [30:22]

Humans shall differ, that is not the issue. The issue is: How as a Muslim should one confront these differences of opinions and what should be our relationship with someone of a different opinion.

Allah ta`ala commanded us to call and advise people in this Deen of Al-Islam. Many Muslims set off on this mission blindfolded, not realizing that the map was there in the Qur`an also. In fact, in the very same verse where Allah commanded us to call and advise people in this Deen, Allah taught us how to do it. Read the following verse carefully:

"Invite (fi`l Amr - Allah is commanding) to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction and argue with them in a way that is best! " - Surah An-Nahl 16/125.

There is no need to philosophize. No need to talk in the flower gardens. It is right there, plain and simple for anyone who would take heed.

There in that Ayah are the three ingredients to apply when we disagree with someone. The same Allah that taught us to debate the truth, taught us how to do it:

1 - With Hikmah (wisdom)
2 - With good instruction, and
3 - To argue in a way that is best.

What does it mean to have Hikmah when differing with someone? The grandsons of Rasul Allah(saw) once set one of the most beautiful examples of Hikmah in advising others. Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn - in their young age - once saw a senior man performing Wudu incorrectly. Together they arranged a plan to teach the man without insulting him, advising him in a manner befitting of his age.

Together they went to the senior and announced, "My brother and I have differed over who amongst us performs Wudu the best. Would you mind being the judge to determine which one of us indeed performs Wudu more correctly."

The man watched intently as the two grandsons of Rasul Allah performed Wudu in an explicit manner. After they had completed, he thanked them and said, "By Allah, I did not know how to perform Wudu before this. You have both taught me how to do it correctly."

We must understand that there are two dimensions to Hikmah. Firstly, there is the Hikmah of knowledge - Hikmah Ilmiyyah. And secondly, there is the Hikmah of Action - Hikmah Amaliyyah.

Some people may have Hikmah of knowledge. But we see that when they try correcting others, advising them, they lack the Hikmah of Action. This causes many a common folk to reject the Hikmah of knowledge.

To illustrate this hikmah of knowledge without Hikmah of action, a brother once completed the Salah in a local Masjid and then proceeded to shake hands with the people on his right and left. The brother to his immediate right slapped his hand and snapped, "That is not part of the Sunnah!" The man replied most correctly, "Oh, is disrespect and insult part of the Sunnah?"

To show Hikmah when we differ requires the following:

Sincerity

One: If we differ, our intentions should be that we are differing in the sincere hope of coming away with the truth. Our intentions should be sincere to Allah.

We should not differ just to release some hate or envy in our heart. We should not differ to embarrass someone like we may have been embarrassed.

Rasul Allah said, "Whoever learns knowledge - knowledge from that which should be sought for the sake of Allah - only to receive a commodity of the material world, he shall not find the fragrance of jannah on the day of resurrection." - An authentic hadith narrated by Abu Dawood in Kitab Al-Ilm.

Kindness and Gentleness

Two: To have Hikmah when differing means we should rarely depart from an atmosphere of kindness and gentleness, we should seldom allow ourselves to become angry and raise our voices.

Fir`own (Pharaoh) was one of the evilest people that lived. Musa was one of the noblest. Look at how Allah told Musa to advise Fir`own...

"Go, both of you, to Fir`own. Indeed, he has transgressed. And speak to him with gentle speech, perhaps he may remember or fear (Allah)."

A man once entered upon the Khalifah and chastised him for some policies he had taken. The Khalifah replied, "By Allah, Fir`own was more eviler than me. And by Allah, Musa was more pious than you. Yet, Allah commanded him...`And speak to him with gentle speech, perhaps he may remember or fear (Allah).`"(by Muhammad Alshareef )

Islamic Articles (12 Tips for Muslim Youth)

Tip 1 : Make Your Intention Sincere

All work we do should ideally be for the sake of Allah. That includes the task of bringing someone closer to Allah. That of course means this should not be connected to arrogance, thinking you`re the teacher and everyone else should be lucky you`ve embarked on a crusade to save them. Guidance is from Allah. Make Dua and make sincere efforts and remember Allah can also misguide you if He wills (we seek refuge in Allah from that).

Tip& 2 : Practice What YOu Preach

Not practicing what you preach is wrong and you will lose the confidence of anyone, young or old, once they figure you out. Don`t do it.

Tip& 3 : Use The Quran Seerah (biography of the Prophet peace be upon him) As Dawa Guides

Read and understand those chapters of the Quran which talk about how the Prophets presented the message of Islam to their people. Read the Seerah (for some good Seerah books)to see especially how the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) brought Islam to so many different people, including young people.

As well, talk to Dawa workers, and check out manuals they may have written, like Yahiya Emerick`s How to Tell Others About Islam.

Tip 4 : Talk To People As If You Really Dont Know Them

Don`t assume you know someone just by looking at them. You don`t know that the Muslim girl in your homeroom who walks through the school`s hallways as if they were fashion show catwalks (see Ambe Rehman`s perspective on this) is not someone you can talk to about Allah because she looks like a snob. Or that the Muslim guy who you`ve never seen at Juma at your university is a "bad Muslim". Maybe he was never really taught Islam and has no idea what importance Friday prayers have in Islam, especially for Muslim men.

Tip& 5 : Smile

Did you know the Prophet was big on smiling? But many "practicing" Muslims seem to have "their faces on upside down" as one speaker once said-frowning and serious.

Smiling, being polite and kind are all part of the manners of the Prophet, which we must exercise in our daily lives. If we want to approach others with Islam, we have to make ourselves approachable. Smiling is key to this.

But note that being approachable does not mean being flirtations with the other gender. There are Islamic rules for how men and women should deal with each other which have to be respected. Dawa is no excuse to have long and private conversations and meetings with the other sex, for example. Set up a system where someone expressing an interest in Islam is referred to someone of the same sex.

Tip 6 : Take The Initiative Hang Out With Them

Take the first step and invite someone you may have spoken to a couple of times to sit at lunch together, to check out a hockey game or invite them over for Iftar in Ramadan. Also, share difficulties, sorrows and frustrations. Help with homework, be a shoulder to cry on when depression hits, or just plain listen when your friend is upset, discuss common problems and KEEP THEIR SECRETS. There are few things as annoying as a snitch and backstabber. But an important note: if the problem is of a serious nature,(i.e. your friend is thinking of committing suicide or is taking drugs), notify and consult an adult immediately.

Tip& 7 : Show Them Islam Is Relevent Today, Right Here, Right Now

Young people may think Islam is too "old fashioned" and not in tune with the modern age. Prove this wrong. Show how Islam is really about relating to Allah, which any human being can do, anywhere, anytime. Allah is always closer to you than your jugular vein and He hears and knows everything. Encourage friends to ask Allah`s help during tests, exams, and in dealing with problems at home with parents and siblings. Also point out how Islam relates to teenagers: Islam gives you focus and an understanding of who you are and where you are going, which most of "teen culture" does not.

Tip 8 : Get Them Involved In Volunteer Work With You

If you are already involved in the community, get your friend to help out. Ask them to make a flyer for one of your youth group`s events or brainstorm for ideas about activities to hold this school year. This involvement makes them feel part of the Muslim community and deepens your friendship, since you are now working together on something beneficial for both of you. Make sure you thank them for their contribution.

Tip 9 : Ask Them 4 Fundamental Questions

As your friendship develops, you will notice the topics you discuss may become more serious. You may be discussing, for instance, future goals and plans. Khan recommends four questions to ask that can steer the topic to Allah and Islam:

a. Where am I going in life and what would make me really happy deep down inside?
b. What do I believe?
c. Who should I be grateful to?
d. Did I get to where I am today without the help of anyone?
Tip 10 : Emphasize Praying 5 Times A Day Before Any Other Aspect Of Islam

A person`s main connection with Allah, on a daily basis, is through the prayer five times a day. Don`t emphasize any other aspect of Islam until your friend starts making a real effort to pray five times a day. Emphasize the direct connection one has with Allah in prayer. If they are facing a problem, tell them to pray, and to ask Allah for help in Salah and outside this time. When possible, make it a point to pray together during your "hang out time". If your friend begins to pray, that is the first step to other aspects of Islam like giving up swearing, treating parents with respect or dressing Islamically.

Tip 11 : Help Instill Confidence In Adults

Adults, like Bart Simpson`s dad Homer, are considered bumbling idiots in the eyes of "teen culture". Your job as a young Muslim is to help turn the tables on this false and unIslamic belief. All you have to do is this: when a Muslim adult does something good (i.e. saving someone`s life, donating money to a worthy cause, the Imam gives a good speech, taking good care of his/her family) bring it up in the course of your conversations with your friend and praise the adult in question. Doing this regularly may not only change your friend`s perspective, but could lead to them seeing their own parents in a more respectful way.

Tip& 12 : Support Them Even When They Become More Practicing

Remember, just because a person starts practicing Islam more regularly, this does not mean everything will be okay from this point onwards. There will still be hard times, difficulties. There may be times when your friend may have doubts about his or her newfound practice of Islam. Be there to reassure them.

Muslim Skulls in Church

PLEASE LOOK CAREFULY AT THE SKULS IN THESE PICTURES.
In the city of Sedelik of the Czech Republic, there is a very interesting church. This church is not made of wood, nor it is made of cement, nor it is made of metal, but instead it is made of parts of Muslims. In the year of 1218, the Pope of that time, to show pride, ordered the construction of a church bringing the bones of Muslims killed for its construction. The order was sent to the country by bringing the bones of 40,000 Muslims. They say that Muslims are Terrorists...Just take a look for yourself!!!

Hakeemullah's dead - Taliban confirmed

KARACHI: The Taliban based in Orakzai Agency confirmed on Tuesday that Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan chief Hakeemullah Mehsud is dead.
However, Alam Tariq the offiicial Taliban spokesman has not yet made a statement.
Sources said that Maulvi Noor Jamal has been nominated as Mehsud's succesor.

Government officials too have confirmed his death and have said that he was killed in a Shaktoi drone strike last month.
American and Pakistani officials had been saying Mehsud was dead since the past few weeks.
