New iPhone system, with multi-tasking, unveiled
Cupertino, California (Wired) -- Apple unveiled details of its next-generation iPhone operating system Thursday in a press event at the company's headquarters here.
The new operating system, iPhone OS 4, will be released to developers this week and to consumers this summer. It will give developers access to calendar, photo library, still image and video data, and includes features aimed at helping apps run faster.
As expected, the new OS will support multitasking of apps.
"We weren't the first to this party but we're going to be the best, just like cut and paste," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, alluding to the fact that cut-and-paste hadn't been available until a year after the first iPhone launched.
"It's really easy to implement multitasking in a way that drains battery life. If you don't do it just right your phone's going to feel sluggish and your battery life is going to go way down. We've figured out how to implement multitasking of third-party apps and avoid those things."
With the new OS, users will be able to press the home button twice to see a menu of all the currently active apps, which appears as a bar along the bottom of the screen. Tapping one of the apps takes you directly into that app. Apps can remain running in the background.
Apple demonstrated how you can keep listening to music in Pandora while doing other things on the phone, and how the phone could deliver push notifications to alert users to an incoming Skype call.
"It was really simple to implement. Just a dozen lines of code," said Skype's head of product development David Ponsford.
To address privacy concerns, the OS will also let you know (via a notification on the app's icon) when an app running in the background has requested your location from the device's GPS.
The announcement comes less than a week after Apple's launch of its tablet computer, the iPad. Jobs said the company had sold 450,000 iPads to date, and that users have downloaded more than 1 million iPad applications and over 650,000 digital books from the iBooks store.
Jobs also added that the company has sold more than 50 million iPhones and 35 million iPod Touches.

Tomorrow, I will don the the uniform of the academic and re-enter society, NOT as I once was, a worker and pawn of the educated classes, but as a peer of those very people. Tomorrow, I shall become an academic!

Dressed in a pair of green slacks with shortened legs, red cardigan and egg-yolk-stained tee-shirt; sporting a scraggly beard and armed only with a pipe, I stepped onto the University Campus. Immediately upon mumbling some incomprehensible gibberish, I was greeted on with respect and awe by my fellow academia. Applying for tenure was simple. The questions were very direct:
They: Do you know what you`re doing?
Me: This is Belgium, right?
They: You have a masters in English?
Me: I have a Red Volvo!
They: And you`re applying for a position in the department of Physics?
Me: I think sometimes, therefore I am illogical!
I was appointed immediately and released to an unsuspecting student population.

But it doesn`t have to be this way. With the right tools, you can get ahead, even in the current climate. Here are some insider tips for moving up the ladder:
1. Have a plan. "The people who get the best jobs have been planning their strategy for one year or more," says Jay Jessup, the author of the personal-branding book "Fame 101." He cites Oprah Winfrey as a perfect example: "She planned her success every step of the way, and is still thinking ahead five years," he says.
2. Ask for what you want. "If you want a promotion, you need to clearly ask for it. If you don`t ask, you won`t get it," says Laura Browne, the author of "Why Can`t You Communicate Like Me? How Smart Women Get Results at Work." "No one is just going to hand you a promotion."

"While you may think you`re talking to somebody in confidence, you`ve got factors like open-air cubicles, restrooms, e-mail "reply to all" mistakes, and instant messaging that can easily vault your "secret" information into the public domain." Youngquist`s simple solution to this issue is to keep quiet. "Only talk about your search off-site with trusted friends where it`s far less likely for somebody to overhear you," he says.

"While these channels account for only 20 to 30 percent of all the jobs filled out there, they take far less time to implement than networking," says Youngquist. Because so many Americans are out of shape, physically fit people have an edge when applying for physically demanding jobs, says Brian Sharkey, a coauthor of the 2008 book "Hard Work." You must be in shape to qualify for many tough jobs, and some jobs, such as firefighter, require passing an annual fitness exam.
Sharkey recommends that if you`re out of shape and want a shot at a physically hard job, you allow several months to get in shape. Prospective employers can provide information on the physical requirements for their jobs and in some cases can offer training recommendations. Many people need to build up their strength or work on the aerobic conditioning needed for many tough jobs.
"You need to have endurance to do something like fighting a wildfire all day long," Sharkey says.
Here are some of the best-paying jobs that demand--and help you maintain--physical fitness:
1. Sheet-metal worker
It`s sweaty, dangerous work: fabricating all the metal pieces needed in buildings, from downspouts and siding to air-conditioning ducts. Apprentices usually do four or more years of classroom and on-the-job training, and demand is expected to grow by 6 percent in the next decade, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. Median annual salary: $52,829

2. Police and sheriff`s patrol officer
They may have a patrol-cars-and-doughnuts image, but in reality law officers may need to sprint after suspects or wrestle them to the ground. The BLS reports that future demand for officers is expected to grow 8.7 percent. Median annual salary: $50,190
3. Electrician
Working around potentially dangerous electrical wires all day, electricians need strength to bend conduit, climb ladders, and lift heavy objects. They may also need to stoop or kneel for long periods as they wrestle wires into place. As we head into economic recovery, demand for electricians is forecast to soar nearly 12 percent, the BLS says. Apprenticeship programs usually last four years. Shatkin says demand may be better than initially forecast due to the electrical component in booming green technology--electricians are needed to wire solar panels. Median annual salary: $45,524
4. Firefighter
Blazing heat, blinding smoke, irregular hours--what`s not to love? Firefighting attracts people who thrive on danger and who can go with the flow. Most firefighters work for local governments. Population growth in coming years will see this occupation grow more than 18 percent. Median annual salary: $44,795
5. Brickmason or blockmason
Bricklaying is one task that`s still done by hand--lifting heavy materials into place and stooping or kneeling are common workday activities. Apprentices train for up to four years. Stir constantly over medium high heat 3-4 minutes until mixture is thickened. Stir in vanilla and 1 cup half and half and chill in refrigerator. Strain through a very fine sieve or cheesecloth. Add remaining half and half and freeze in an ice cream maker 20-30 minutes until frozen.
