LHC issues notice to file high treason case against Musharraf

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to the federation to file a high treason case against former President Pervez Musharraf.

The notices have been issued after a petition was filed by advocate Ilamuddin Ghazi under Article 6, seeking registration of a case against Musharraf.

The petitioner alleged that Musharraf violated his oath as an army officer by abrogating the constitution and dismissing an elected government.

The petitioner stated that Musharraf had violated the constitution by detaining several judges of the superior judiciary and even placed the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and his family under house arrest.

In the petition he said that government of Pakistan is not serious for registering a case against former military dictator and requested the court to issue orders to government to take action against him under Article 6 of the constitution.

LHC has issued notices to the federation on his petition.

Count us out, Nawaz tells Gilani

LAHORE: A clear-cut ‘no-cooperation’ message by ally and the arch rival Nawaz Sharif has reportedly panicked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, making him publicly talk of ‘conspiracies’ being hatched against his government.

The PML-N chief has reportedly told the prime minister unequivocally that in future he (PM) should not expect any co-operation from his party.

A source informed Dawn on Tuesday that Nawaz Sharif’s message had panicked the prime minister as it was indicative of some ‘serious move’ to send his government packing.

“Though apparently, Mr Sharif has expressed his annoyance with the prime minister for backing out of his commitment to constitute an independent commission to monitor the relief work and funds collection for the flood-affected people, the premier believes that the PML-N is seriously contemplating to pose a challenge to his government at the behest of the establishment,” he said.

PML-N senior leader MNA Khawaja Asif has also confirmed that the PML-N chief had given a “clear-cut message” to PM Gilani about his (Nawaz’s) party’s future stance. “Our leadership has made it clear to PM Gilani that it will not support him on any issue and also in case a move is initiated to bring about a constitutional change.”

“Rather we will go for an in-house change. It’s a number game in parliament to bring a no-confidence motion against the prime minister. When we will have the required number we will go for it,” Khawaja Asif added. To a question about the possibility of PML-N ‘merger’ with the PML-Q in this regard, he said it was out of question, hastening to add there could be a possibility of “cooperation” between the two leagues, however, over the issue (of bringing no-confidence move against the prime minister). “We are ready to show flexibility for democracy and national interest,” he said.

The PML-Q and PML-Functional have already announced a merger of the factions.

PML-Q senior vice-president Senator Wasim Sajjad said his party would not be part of any unconstitutional move to topple the present set up. “The present government should complete its tenure. We are also not in favour of supporting a no-confidence motion against PM Gilani,” he said.

About unification of PML-N and Q, Senator Sajjad said: “We have personal contacts with the N leaders, however, there are efforts under way for the merger.”

Premier’s son MPA Abdul Qadir Gilani told Dawn the PPP was ready to face any such challenge. “Governments come and go. We accept the challenges with an open heart,” he said.

Junior Gilani said since Mian Nawaz Sharif had clarified that he would not support any unconstitutional change, the PPP was not worried.

ISLAMABAD: A ceremony was held in Islamabad to formally launch All Pakistan Muslim League, proposed by Gen. (Retd.) Pervez Musharraf.

Addressing the ceremony, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif spokesman of former president Pervez Musharraf claimed that All Pakistan Muslim League is the name of the latter’s party. An application has already been submitted to the concerned authority for registration of the party’s name, he added.

“If anyone else is also interested in this name, he is most welcome to join us,”

PML-N vows to defend democracy

LAHORE: After Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s speech in Lahore on Saturday, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has made a final decision to adopt a stern stand to defend democracy.

A strategy has been crafted to present the party’s point of view in the sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate starting on Monday (today) on issues such as the government’s performance, help to flood survivors, and Indian atrocities in disputed Kashmir.

Nawaz Sharif chaired a special meeting of the party leadership held at his Raiwind estate on Saturday. Attendees included central and provincial leaders of the party, including Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Senator Parvez Rashid and Khawja Saad Rafiq.

The meeting had detailed consultations on the present political situation. Three adjournment motions submitted by the party in the National Assembly also figured in the discussions and a strategy was devised on how the party MPs will tackle issues in the Parliament.

The meeting decided that if democracy is threatened, the PML-N should be the first to come out into the field and face whatever the circumstances. A clear-cut stand will be taken on the Kashmir situation and voice will be raised in the parliament in support of the Kashmiri protesters, the party resolved.

Sharif told the meeting that his party had no differences with the federal government and if any threat to democracy emerged, the PML-N would be the first to put up defence for it. He added that the federal government should also take decisions according to the desires of the federation, respect institutions, including the judiciary, in order to bolster democracy.

Benazir Bhutto monument provokes anger in Pakistan

Mrs Bhutto, a former prime minister of Pakistan and member of one of the country's most powerful families, was assassinated in a suicide attack in December 2007. Asif Ali Zardari, her husband, is now president, and the 10-acre park and library complex in her name received approval at the start of the month.

The monument has been more than two years in the planning and had already attracted the ire of political opponents and campaigners before the floods. The government has estimated that the floods have caused damage of $43 billion.

Kamran Shafi, a former press secretary to Mrs Bhutto and columnist for Dawn newspaper, has led the call to scrap the project. "It looks extremely bad when so many people are without medicine or homes," he said. "The idea is silly."

Mr Zardari has been accused of politicising relief efforts after his ruling Pakistan People's Party suggesting building new towns for flood victims to be named Benazirabad.

Plans for two monuments – one in Rawalpindi on the assassination site and one in Islamabad – have already survived a legal challenge, which argued that Mrs Bhutto should not be considered a "national hero".

A thousand people a day are signing an online petition urging the monument money be spent on flood relief instead. It says: "Our priority should be our people who are suffering, and we are almost sure that our former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, who loved this country and its people, would also agree."

Farhatullah Babar, the president's spokesman, defended the project. "Benazir Bhutto was the twice elected prime minister of Pakistan and she did so much for democracy and human rights that it is only fitting a memorial is built in her honour," he said.

"The design has been approved but so far no funds have been released. The committee will now consider what to do in light of the floods,” he added.

Musharraf should return to Pakistan to face court cases: Rehman Malik

Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that Pervez Musharraf being a Pakistani can return home at any time adding that there has been no reality in the news item that "I have written a letter to Pervez Musharraf".

Talking to media here on Thursday, he stated that former president Pervez Musharraf should return to Pakistan and face the cases against him as "we are also facing the cases against us in the court".

Regarding plot to kill Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif Rehman Malik said that he is in touch with the registrars of the four provincial high courts so that a Judicial Commission should be set up for Inquiry.

He said that security of judges has been doubled after this threat and anyone who has prepared this plot action would be taken against them.

He also said that the government has been endeavoring to formulate an act to shun election violations adding that the government has already suggested to ban display of arms in the premises of polling stations and rangers should be deputed at the polling stations to ensure transparency in the elections and by-elections should be held under SOP, Rehman Malik maintained.

Interior Minister also informed that during his meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, he has demanded to take action against Barhamdagh Bughti, who has reported to be present in Afghanistan.

Interior Minister also stated that there has been a report related to inflow of terrorists' elements and arms from Afghan area 'Kuntar' inside Pakistan and in this connection Pakistan has informed with its concerns to Afghan President.
He also emphasized that the federal government would fully cooperate with the Election Commission to provide security on by-elections.

No one to be allowed to use delaying tactics: Nawaz

Lahore—PML-N Quaid Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has said that the distressed flood-stricken people cannot be left at the mercy of any department and no department would be allowed to use delaying tactics in the relief measures for political motives.

“If NADRA did not improve its performance, some alternative arrangement would be considered,” Nawaz said while chairing a meeting here Wednesday in which various proposals with regard to setting up model villages in flood-hit areas and provision of financial assistance to the affectees were considered.

Nawaz said: “We had faced such natural calamity in 1992 and had distributed financial assistance in a transparent manner in the flood-affectees while NADRA did not exist at that time.”

Opposition leader Ch. Nisar Ali urged NADRA to review its performance and ensure distribution of cards by October 20. He said that NADRA is not a personal property of any one.

During the meeting, office-bearers and parliamentarians belonging to PML-N lodged complaints against NADRA regarding distribution of financial assistance in the flood-hit areas. The elected representatives of Mianwali said that the officials of NADRA do not cooperate with the people without giving any reason. Likewise the widows and heads of families are not being acknowledged and new national identity cards are not being issued in place of CNICs lost during flood.

The leadership of PML-N took serious notice of this situation and said that the lethargy and inaptness of NADRA would not be allowed to create hurdle in the way of rehabilitation of flood affectees.

Director General NADRA Punjab, Iqbal Tiwana, who also attended the meeting, said he will improve the performance of NADRA.

Chief Minister Punjab, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Ch. Nisar Ali Khan, Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Senior Advisor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, Members National and Provincial Assemblies, Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning & Development, Senior Member Board of Revenue and architects attended the meeting.

Quaid PML-N Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif said that such a system should be adopted for provision of financial assistance to the flood affectees as a result of which not only financial assistance could be provided to them on-time but they should also not face any difficulty.

He said that no stone should be left unturned for provision of all facilities to the families displaced due to flood. He said that committees headed by DCOs should be constituted to supervise the process of distribution of relief amounts in the affected districts and a programme should be chalked out at village level for distribution of these amounts and flood affectees should be informed about the plan evolved with regard to distribution of this aid.

Nawaz said that transport should also be arranged for bringing the flood-affectees at NADRA centers for getting financial assistance. He said that provincial ministers should be deputed to review the distribution of financial aid in the affected districts and these Ministers should personally supervise the process of distribution of these amounts in their respective areas. He said that it is also right of the provinces to review this fact that whether the distribution work of financial assistance is being carried out satisfactorily or otherwise as provincial governments are also giving 50 per cent share of financial assistance.

Regarding setting up of model villages in flood-hit areas, Nawaz Sharif said that such villages should be constructed for affectees with houses and all basic amenities.

Addressing the meeting, Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif said that initially, the process of distribution of amounts at the rate of Rs.20 thousand per family among the affectees in flood-hit areas is continuing transparently. He said that sites are being identified for setting up model villages and besides well-to-do people, public partnership will also be encouraged for this purpose

Zardari's Rs.900million Benazir Bhutto memorial plan angers Pakistanis

Islamabad, Sep 16(ANI): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has invited public ire over plans to build a Rs.900million memorial for his late wife, Benazir Bhutto.

Benazir, a former Prime Minister, was assassinated in December 2007.

The 10-acre park and library complex was approved last month, but it has provoked anger in Pakistan. People are demanding that the Rs.900million cost for the project should be diverted to help the flood victims.

The monument has been in the pipeline for over two years, and has also attracted the ire of political opponents and campaigners before the floods.

A thousand people a day are signing an online petition urging the monument money be spent on flood relief instead.

"Our priority should be our people who are suffering, and we are almost sure that our former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, who loved this country and its people, would also agree," The Telegraph quoted the online petition, as saying. (ANI)

Da wah Explosion Article

The battle of Cesmi is a significant event in the history of the Turkish caliphate. In this battle, fought in July 1770, the Ottoman naval establishment was destroyed by a Russian fleet at the harbor of Cesmi on the Aegean sea. (13/784) A few years later, in May 1799, the British forces defeated and killed the Muslim ruler Tipu Sultan of South India. This was the beginning of the end. Subsequently, the European Christian nations conquered, directly or indirectly, all of the Muslim countries one after the other, thus establishing their own political supremacy.

A building for Bhutto: A monumental mistake

Is our leadership foolish or do they simply enjoy poking the nation every now and then? A monument for Benazir would have been a good idea, had there been no floods!

As the millions affected by the flood await help and support, our leaders have been going around gathering funds from around the globe. While the initial aid received will help the government support the affected people on an emergency basis, billions of dollars are required to get Pakistan up and running.

While we receive international money and continue to ask for more, there was an urgent need to pay our respects to the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto by building a monument that would ultimately cost somewhere around Rs. 1 billion. My question is, why now? Did the honorable Prime Minister think the people of Pakistan won’t notice? Or did he think the international media would ignore it? Or is it a twisted strategy to win the public? Or is it plain stupidity?

Benazir Bhutto was a great woman. Her global presence and charming personality will always be remembered. Would it not be a wise idea to help rehabilitate the flood affected people of Pakistan in Benazir’s name? In fact, the government could have spent twice the amount on setting up a small village for the poor in Benazir’s name or a shelter for the poor where free food would be distributed. No taxpayer would oppose such a gesture. However, the government chose to go with a concrete, heartless slab to remember a grand personality like Benazir’s. The government decided to tell the international community that Pakistan needs more aid from abroad because it has a better use for its own cash.

Such an amount does not drastically disturb the budget of the country. Everybody will continue living like they do, with or without the monument. However, it has a symbolic value. At a time when millions cry for a meal, creating a monument for Benazir is like throwing mud on her legacy. The woman represented the people of Pakistan. Even those who opposed her policy could not deny that she was the face of Pakistan’s public. Surely a person like that does not need a building to keep her place in the hearts and minds of people.

The post-Bhutto Peoples Party clearly has issues. The insecurity is such that they cannot let the people forget that they represent Benazir Bhutto. It is not their fault because it was Benazir’s vote bank that got them into power. It is Benazir’s memory that stands stronger than all these leaders combined. It is Benazir’s legacy that helps these incompetent individuals stay in power.

Former President Musharraf spent Rs700 million on a national monument. That money could have been spent elsewhere and put to better use. But millions of Pakistanis were not homeless during that time, hence, the level of criticism was relatively low.

Benazir Bhutto’s legacy must stand differently. There is a time for everything, and now is not the time for Benazir’s monument.

Show leniency towards Aamer, says Musharraf

Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf Wednesday called for leniency for suspended Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Aamer saying that the 18-year-old may have acted under the influence of the senior players.

The tainted trio of Aamer, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt has been suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on spot-fixing charges during the last Test against England at Lord's.

Musharraf condemned cheating but said Aamer should be pardoned, citing his youth, his talent and poor family background.

'This boy, I would say, is hardly a man at 18, who came under the influence of senior players, needs to be seen compassionately for the sake of his family and for the sake of cricket at large. It's a very sad incident,' Musharraf was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph on the sidelines of an investor conference in Hong Kong.

'Instead of destroying a person, rehabilitation of the person is required. We need to do everything to rehabilitate him and set an example for others.'

Musharraf's comments came after he expressed his desire to return to Pakistan politics. He announced Wednesday that he is forming a new political party and will return to the country to contest in the national elections in 2013.

The former president took power in a coup in October 1999 but was forced to step down in 2008 amid nationwide protests.

Guess why one sees a horror, thriller film? Obviously to get a shrill down the spine. However, let us inform you that horror is always a tricky genre to deal with. Intimidating people is a tough task. That`s perhaps the reason why we don`t come across many horror films these days. Director Wilson Louis is successful in bits and pieces to instill fright through MALLIIKA. There are some horror films which play with your minds without actually showing you eerie stuff (PARANOMAL ACTIVITY). And then there are films which resort to gory scenes. MALLIIKA falls in the latter category. MALLIKA has al

Emotional Atayachar Reviews

For the uninitiated, a Television channel had registered a case against the producers of THE FILM EMOTIONAL ATYACHAR, for using the name of their TV show with a similar name. But the producers were given a green signal to release the film with a disclaimer. The title has nothing to do with the serial. Nor has it anything to do with the popular song Emotional Ataychar from DEV D (interestingly Kalki`s debut film). In fact, it has nothing to do with the film too. We still wonder why the film is called so. It`s bereft of emotions (apart from violence and greed) but isn`t exactly an atyachar to the senses. Touted as `a road thriller with dark humour` in its promotional campaign, THE FILM EMOTIONAL ATYACHAR is a road thriller for sure. But the humour falls flat and is puerile rather than dark. Without much ado, debutante director Akshay Shere gets straight to the story. The various characters and their intentions are elucidated gradually

BISP kicks off poverty census

ISLAMABAD: Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) on Sunday kicked off countrywide poverty census in order to develop more effective and transparent identification of deserving families in regard with eligibility for cash grant.

The poverty survey has been completed earlier in 38 Districts of the country as an initial phase of the census. BISP Chairperson Farzana Raja said the scope of the programme had been expanded further with the enrollment of recent devastating flood victims, which would enhance the registered families with BISP up to 7 million and more than 35 million individuals.

The BISP chairperson inaugurated the survey by completing a survey form of a poor family after a random ‘knock at door’ here in the locality of Sidu Pura. Besides others, Raja Riaz Ahmad, senior minister of the Punjab government was also present on the occasion.

Ms Raja informed the media representatives that new deserving families would be included in the programme as beneficiary as soon as poverty survey was completed in respected districts. She said that the survey teams of the BISP had already been sent to Punjab Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan to complete countrywide poverty survey. She said that survey is absolutely free of charge and if someone demands even a rupee for the completion of survey, a complaint could be made at 080026477 immediately.

Ms Raja said that it was the first ever poverty survey being conducted in Pakistan and every effort has been made to make this survey foolproof and comprehensive. She said that service to poor and underprivileged of Pakistan was dream of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had scarified her live while her struggle to complete this mission. She said the BISP was carrying forward same dream and it has set 20 percent decrease in the poverty during next 3 years. She said the programme had been attributed with the name of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto; therefore we would leave no stone unturned to make this programme a complete success.

“BISP not only provides monthly cash grants to its beneficiaries, ’’ she said and elaborated that under the Waseela-e-Haq and Waseela-e-Huner initiatives of the programme, entrepreneurship and skill development among under privileged segments of the society are being promoted to enable these segments to live self sustained lives.

Time over for APC on floods: Nawaz

LAHORE – Terrorist activities being perpetrated in various parts of the country are part of enemy’s plan to destabilise Pakistan, PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif said here on Monday.
He maintained that the nation was determined to frustrate the enemy designs through concerted efforts.

The two-time prime minister said this while talking to reporters in the Emergency section of a local hospital where he inquired after the health of those injured in Wednesday’s three back-to-back blasts near Karbala Gamay Shah, which killed more than 40 people and injured some 300 others.
Security at the hospital had been tightened and traffic diverted.

The nation will not give in to the terrorists,” said the PML-N leader.
Replying to a question, Nawaz said the enemy could harbour the desire to consign Pakistan to yet another military rule. He, however, made it clear that the country could not afford such an eventuality yet again.
He said the National Assembly had already addressed in detail the speech made by MQM Chief Altaf Hussain on the subject.
When it was pointed out to him that the NAB prosecutor-general, whose sacking had been ordered by none else but the Supreme Court, was still there on the job, Nawaz said it was regrettable to find that the Apex Court’s decision had not been implemented.
He called upon the government to enforce the verdict.
The former prime minister said the judiciary had been restored not with a hope that it would provide a chance to the government to flout its verdicts.

He said if President Asif Ali Zardari was obstructing the judicial verdict, the Prime Minister should stop him. Otherwise, he said, both the President and the Prime Minister would be held responsible for defiance
He told a questioner that an all-party conference being considered by the government on the issue of flood situation had lost its utility as the time to hold it was already over.

NAB arrests Sharif’s brother-in-law

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested on Thursday former National Assembly member Suhail Zia Butt, a brother-in-law of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, over charges of defaulting on a Rs70 million loan.

Suhail Butt was on way to his office after attending a funeral in the Model Town area when he was picked up by a special team of NAB near Kalma Chowk in Garden Town. He was shifted to the Chamba House. NAB has accused Butt of misappropriating over Rs70 million in a cooperative companies scam. In 2000, NAB registered cases against him of withdrawing money by swindling cooperative banks. Butt was declared a proclaimed offender in absentia by an accountability court in 2001. He returned to Pakistan in 2008 before the elections after spending more than seven years abroad and no action had been taken against him for almost two years.

Other accused in the case include Chaudhry Tajammul Hussain, the late uncle of PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chaudhry Nayyar and Chaudhry Abdul Majid.

Zia Butt is a brother-in-law of the Sharif brothers. His son, Umar Suhail Butt, is a sitting MNA from Lahore.

Expressing surprise over Butt’s arrest, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said NAB officials did not take the provincial government into confidence before Suhail’s arrest. He said that he would contact the federal government after collecting facts.

Relatives of the accused told reporters that the case has “no basis and the PPP is trying to politically victimise us”.

Angelina Jolie has contributed $100,000

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has contributed $100,000 (about Pakistani Rs.8.5 million) for flood ravaged Pakistan, a move that surpasses President Asif Ali Zardari's Rs.5 million donation and the help extended by most other politicians.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and top leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Awami National Party and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F have not made donations in cash; instead, they donated in kind.

"The prime minister has already said that he does not believe in cash contribution and thus he did not deposit money in the fund, but his son in Multan dispatched many trucks of goods on behalf of the family," Dawn quoted the prime minister's press secretary Shabir Anwar as saying.

The floods started July 28 with heavy monsoon rains and went on to submerge thousands of villages, wash away hundreds of kilometres of roads, dozens of bridges and over 1.7 million acres of crops.

he country's worst natural disaster has killed over 1,600 people and affected about 20 million nationwide, with the threat of disease ever-present in the camps sheltering survivors.

Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said: "During his recent visit to the UK, President Zardari announced Rs.2.5 million in donation and after his return he contributed another Rs.2.5 million to the prime minister's flood relief fund."

He added that Zardari's children - Bilawal Zardari-Bhutto, Bakhtawar Zardari and Asifa Zardari - had set up a fund in Britain to collect donation from overseas Pakistanis and others.

Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and their family have reportedly handed over goods worth Rs.25 million. But there was no contribution in cash.

"Sharif family has sent relief goods amounting to Rs.25 million to flood-hit areas," said PML-N spokesperson Siddiqul Farooq.

He criticised President Zardari for contributing just Rs.5 million.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan of the PML-N, has told his party members to donate to the Punjab chief minister's relief fund instead of the prime minister's fund.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan's monetary help stood at Rs.500,000.

"Khan donated Rs.500,000 from his own pocket. He and the party are actively participating in fund-raising campaigns," PTI's spokesperson Tahir Jamil said, and added that Khan would take 300 trucks carrying relief goods to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sunday.

The contribution of PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and his family was Rs.25 million in kind.

"Relief goods have been dispatched to Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur and other parts of Punjab," said Mustafa Malik, PML-Q's deputy information secretary.
