Pakistan Kyber mosque bombing: one of country's worst attacks 50 Killed

Officials have blamed the Pakistani Taliban for attacking a mosque attended by pro-government tribesmen during Friday prayers. At least 50 worshipers were killed.

In one of Pakistan's deadliest attacks in recent years, a suicide bomber blew himself up in a packed mosque Friday, killing at least 50 worshipers and injuring more than 100 in Pakistan’s tribal belt of Khyber.

Around 400 tribesmen were at the main Madina Mosque in Jamrod performing Friday prayers when the bomber detonated his bomb. The explosion caused the roof of the mosque to collapse, burying many of the worshipers.

“I was offering prayers when the blast hit us. I fell unconscious and when regained consciousness I could only see clouds of smoke, dead and injured around me," says Hashmat Ullah Kooki Khel, a witness the Monitor reached by phone.

Most of the victims belong to THE Kookikhel tribe that is largely considered to pro-government and anti-Taliban. The Pakistani Taliban has not claimed responsibility but officials have blamed the militants for the bombing.

“This is [a] cowardly attack by Taliban and the attackers cannot be Muslims to kill innocent worshipers in the holy month of Ramadan,” Mian Iftikhar Hussain, information minister of Khyber Pakhtoon Khawa province, told reporters. During the month-long holiday, Muslims all over the world observe fasting and offer special prayers.

“They are weakened and the operations by security forces have broken their backbone, so it could be [a] revenge tactic,” Mr. Hussain said.

The Khyber region has great strategic importance as it borders Afghanistan and is a gateway for NATO supplies to US-led forces in Afghanistan.

The area is known as being a hotbed of militants from Ansar-ul-Islam and Lashkar-e-Islam. Lashkar-e-Islam (Army of Islam) is headed by militant commander Manghal Bagh, while its rival Ansar-ul-Islam operates under Qazi Mohib. Both groups are fighting against Pakistani forces in Khyber.

The rivals have a long history of fighting, which has claimed hundreds of lives. Pakistan’s military launched a crackdown in 2009 to clear the region of militants.

In the past, Taliban militants and their allied groups have attacked at mosques and assemblies of tribesmen, known as jirgas, attended by anti-Taliban militias in Pakistan’s northwest.

Last year, the Taliban carried out twin suicide attacks in the village of Darra Adam Khel, where local tribesmen were resisting Taliban influence. More than 60 people were killed in that attack.

About 150,000 Pakistani troops have been deployed in the semiautonomous mountainous tribal belt and have been fighting Al Qaeda and Taliban militants along Afghanistan border. In retaliation, the Taliban have carried out deadly attacks in several cities across Pakistan.

Some months ago U.S. administration awarded “Legion of Merit” to Admiral Noman Bashir, people astonished that what kind of links Pakistan Navy has with war of terror, because Pakistan’s areas chosen by U.S. for operational purposes like Swat, Malakand and FATA or outside Pakistan like Afghanistan have no links with sea.

Most people are not aware of the fact that Pakistan Navy is fighting U.S. war of terror like Pakistan army and Pakistan air force devotedly and its mercenaries services are mostly outside boundaries of Pakistan.

According to Associated Press dated: Jan 04, 2011 the Air Chief Marshall Rao Qamar Suleman addressing the 94th officers commissioning parade held at Pakistan Naval Academy (PNA) on Monday said “The geo-political situation has undergone radical changes especially over the past few years. Pakistan today stands committed in the war against terrorism”. He commended participation of Pakistan Navy in Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan (CMCP). He said that the opportunity to command Combined Task Force -150 four times by PN is a testimony of their professional excellence. Pakistan Navy has been entrusted with the onerous command of Combined Task Force 151 in the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin to deter and disrupt piracy for the benefit of all nations.

What is Combined Task Force 150 & 151?

The Combined Task Force 150 was established under doctrine of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001, including naval forces from U.S., France, Germany, Italy, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom. The major assignments to task force are together with maritime security operations in the Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean.
In 2004 the US Defence approved seven P-3C Orion aircrafts with the cost of round US $ one billion, two of these were delivered in April 2010, total current strength was between 5-7, out of two destroyed in yesterday’s terrorist attack. Siege of Iranian navy is also an unwritten assignment.

Other activities:

Following few media reports confirms that Pakistan Navy was under control of Fifth U.S. fleet stationed at Bahrain.

July 15, 2007: Pakistan Navy to take charge of Combined Task Force 150 in Gulf. This would be for the second time that Pakistan would get the command of Combined Task Force 150 (CTF-150) of the Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan on Aug 1 for four months.

While two other units handle the Gulf, CTF-150s 15 vessels also patrol an area that includes the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean.

November 04, 2011: Admiral Noman Bashir, was the chief guest on the occasion. “Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan and CTF-151 is a step towards regional and global security”. The Naval Chief said that Pakistan is committed to root out terrorism from the country.
Earlier, Commander Pakistan Fleet Vice Admiral Abbas Raza while giving a detailed account of fleet activities apprised that during 2010, PN ships conducted exercises with various navies including France, USA, UK, Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia.

BBC: Personnel from a Plymouth-based Royal Navy warship have been training with the Pakistan Navy. HMS Cornwall and the Pakistan warship PNS Shahjahan met in the Gulf of Aden in the Arabian Sea. March 09. 2011: The speakers added that Pakistan was the only regional country to have been entrusted with the command of Combined Task Force 151 (CTF) 151 in addition to that of CTF 150. The overall goal was to ensure security of sea lanes and the overall maritime commons for safe use by all nations, they said.

Pakistan Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Abbas Raza said that Pakistan Navy’s initiative of multinational exercise Aman-11 was an effort that would surely improve response, tactics and procedures to enhance interoperability in joint operating environment. The exercise was focused on combating and countering all illegal activities, particularly in North Arabian Sea which was very critical to future energy security and served as lifeline of world energy economies, he added.

Admiral Abbas said that crime and terrorism were not confined to specific boundaries rather their effects were felt all over the world. This also has the potential to create an impact on maritime trade of the region and of the world. He said that use of sea routes by terrorists, human trafficking, smuggling and piracy were major concerns

PNS Mehran attack:

PNS Mehran has facilitation of P3C Orion, the Atlantic, the Fokker, the Sea King and the Alouette.

We don’t know what intentions terrorists might have while destroying Pak Navy’s precious aircrafts. However it surprises everyone that even after terrorist attack and commandos operation was not yet completed but some TV channels pointed finger toward “Taliban”, and within next 12 hrs Interior Minister blamed Taliban as well. Here I don’t want to mention operational details because almost all leading channels are providing information.

On 23rd May the situation became foggier when Admiral Noman Bashir refused to accept that terrorists wanted to destroy aircrafts. Some defence analysts pointed finger towards Indian RAW. Interior Minister did not disclose identity of dead terrorists and said that those were Super Man in European dresses, in the same breathe he confidentially told foreign press that terrorists were speaking “Urdu”.

Hysteria of our own war:

I am writing since long that “Civil War” is a curse, and at many occasions appealed to our forces that do not try to push Pakistani citizens to the wall, historically fall of many nations is witness that how civil wars omitted the names of those countries from the map. Peoples did not believe on war of terror, continuous actions of U.S. against sovereignty of Pakistan have created hate against Government, Pakistan army and War of terror as well.

Liberal Fascists, Gay and Lesbian groups, foreign funded NGO’s, alcoholics, druggies and arms dealers acquired reasonable strength during Musharraf era by taking advantage of 911 for making dollars. When Gen. Kiyani was promoted under U.S. arrangements of NRO and later he was granted unlimited extension in service, at that time he was assigned to continue to push Pakistan in civil war, billions of dollars were charged for fighting U.S. war. Zardari and Gilani type criminals have no footings and their all efforts revolve around saving looted monies. Today Pakistan’s all problems, destruction, terrorism and extra judicial affairs are revolving around NRO.

Gen. Kiyani strengthened and collected RAW, KHAD, KGB and CIA agents around him like MQM, ANP and communists of PPP etc. ISI says that Husain Haqqani has issued 7000 visas to American agents. No days goes that nation did not receive hidden revelations, every new day brings fresh anti-state policies of Government of Pakistan or fresh eye-opener WikiLeaks information, confessions of Mush about sale of air force bases, naval and allowing drone etc type issues, presence of CIA operatives in Pakistan and organization of their network in rural areas of Pakistan. After every terrorists attack, nation reveals that some American’s were present at the spot.

There are dozens of rumours spreading like wildfire such as every scholar is pointing finger that Gen. Kiyani and Zardari syndicate feel secure in taking shelter behind alleging Taliban and Al Kaeda after every incidence of terror, because it not only secures flow of dollars but help in strengthen their rule, on other hand media channels immediately broadcast so called taking responsibility from Taliban without any investigation.

Some have firm belief that U.S. or India is behind terrorists activities. There are two theories, first theory about presence of 11 Chinese technicians speculates that presence of Chinese around U.S. supplied aircrafts irritated U.S., and U.S. destroyed those aircrafts. Second theory says that since Mehran Naval Base was leased to Americans and presence of six Americans invited terrorists to attack on the base.

In another theory India was allergic with surveillance of Indian Ocean and RAW had an eye on naval surveillance capability. Liberal fascists and Zardari mafia has long desire that Pakistan army may strike with Al Kaeda, and that is what Hussain Haqqani and Kiyani likes. There is a deep sectarian abhorrence and Shia-Sunni gulf is also behind military operations. In this connection Hussain Haqqani, Faisal Raza Abidi, Najam Sethi and Nusrat Javed type anchors and politicians are also behind flaring up situation. All above groups by heart desire to engage army in operations.

Conclusion: Current propaganda soon after Abbotabad incidence that 35, 000 persons have been killed by Taliban and Al Kaeda is misleading. In fact above 100,000 persons have been killed in army operations, terrorist actions, drones and round 25, 000 citizens are under imprisonment without any trial, 15,000 persons are missing since long. Round about 500,000 army, Para military, police, intelligence and bureaucracy is engaged in fighting U.S. war of terror. Army and air force is busy in killings by jets and helicopters. Above one million displaced persons have been ruined. MQM and ANP have made life of refugees miserable, police is involved to harass displaced peoples. Anarchic, mismanagement, lack of law and order, mistrust, luxurious life style of elite, presence of American boots on soil, foreign trainers or special services commandos has pushed Pakistan to be called as banana republic.

Civil war will not stop up till Government and authorities would seriously accept inhabitants of FATA as Pakistani citizens. All abducted and imprisoned persons must be brought to civil courts. Pakhtoon living at Karachi are provided security. Law and order must be applied equally, human rights must be observed strictly. Politicians must wait for fixing responsible to any group. Media must black out any claim by terrorists up till it is confirmed. We must reduce revenge seekers and stop fighting at a time on different directions.

In my opinion targeting citizens on the basis of ethnicity and sectarianism always pushes large parts of the society to the wall. If anyone says that terrorists are our citizens then think that it is not our war, it is civil war. And civil disobedience requires political solutions not army operations. As my careful observations large segment of society has turned against state and we need immediate political solutions according to desire of general public. Parliament did not represent peoples anymore, it is better to call for fresh elections.

PNS Mehran was on lease like Jacobabad, Shamsi and Tarbela. All hidden agreements must be brought in the knowledge of public without fail.

It is not our war, mercenaries are not our defenders and NRO’d set up is a conspiracy against Pakistan.

Dear All,

Recently a friend of mine went to visit a patient in a Govt Hospital in Islamabad. A crying person who seemed to be distressed approached him.He told him that he had an emergency patient and wanted to make a call but had no balance in his cell.He pleaded him to let him make a local call. My friend felt pitty on him and gave him his cell phone.The stranger went a few paces away and made a call. He came back thanked my friend and returned his cell phone.

Same day in the evening Islamabad Police raided my friends house arrested him and put him in the Lock Up.It was then revealed that stranger had made a ransom call for release of some person whom he had abducted.My friend is an industrialist himself an owner of a few factories and petrol pumps.He is well placed in the higher circles of Islamabad. He remained in the lock up for a fortnight and has now been released on bail.

LARKANA: Sindh Minister for Law & Parliamentary affairs Mr. Muhammad Ayaz Soomro inaugurated Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto electric feeder at grid station Larkana, speaking on the occasion he said that by opening the new electric feeder the load shedding in Larkana will be decreased and the new grid station in Larkana district will also be inaugurated in near future as well as two other electric feeders will also be in operation with the results the people of Larkana city will be benefited.

He appreciated the efforts of HESCO chief Mr. Nazir Ahmed Shaikh and SEPCO (Sukkur Electric Power Company) chief Mr. Shamsdin Shaikh, P.D SEPCO Mr. Aijaz Gaad, Manager SAPCO Larkana Mr. Noor Ahmed Dayo and other SAPCO officers for completing the new electric feeders in short time in public interest.

While addressing at reception hosted in his honour by the citizens of Shaikh Zaid colony of Larkana Mr. Muhammad Ayaz Soomro has said that the Shaikh Zaid Colony was established by the efforts of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the colony was neglected from the basic facilities in the past. The Minister announced that the MALKANA rights will be given to the residents of Shaikh Zaid Colony Larkana by paying nominal rate of rupees 10 per feet in this regard the DCO Larkana who is the chairman of allotment committee will prepare summary for the honorable chief Minister for approval. The Minister also announced that the public park, Eid Gaah will also be established in the light of the demand of the people of Shaikh Zaid Colony besides the another disposal will be provided so that the drainage system of the colony may be ensured in a proper way.

LHC issues notice to file high treason case against Musharraf

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to the federation to file a high treason case against former President Pervez Musharraf.

The notices have been issued after a petition was filed by advocate Ilamuddin Ghazi under Article 6, seeking registration of a case against Musharraf.

The petitioner alleged that Musharraf violated his oath as an army officer by abrogating the constitution and dismissing an elected government.

The petitioner stated that Musharraf had violated the constitution by detaining several judges of the superior judiciary and even placed the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and his family under house arrest.

In the petition he said that government of Pakistan is not serious for registering a case against former military dictator and requested the court to issue orders to government to take action against him under Article 6 of the constitution.

LHC has issued notices to the federation on his petition.

Count us out, Nawaz tells Gilani

LAHORE: A clear-cut ‘no-cooperation’ message by ally and the arch rival Nawaz Sharif has reportedly panicked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, making him publicly talk of ‘conspiracies’ being hatched against his government.

The PML-N chief has reportedly told the prime minister unequivocally that in future he (PM) should not expect any co-operation from his party.

A source informed Dawn on Tuesday that Nawaz Sharif’s message had panicked the prime minister as it was indicative of some ‘serious move’ to send his government packing.

“Though apparently, Mr Sharif has expressed his annoyance with the prime minister for backing out of his commitment to constitute an independent commission to monitor the relief work and funds collection for the flood-affected people, the premier believes that the PML-N is seriously contemplating to pose a challenge to his government at the behest of the establishment,” he said.

PML-N senior leader MNA Khawaja Asif has also confirmed that the PML-N chief had given a “clear-cut message” to PM Gilani about his (Nawaz’s) party’s future stance. “Our leadership has made it clear to PM Gilani that it will not support him on any issue and also in case a move is initiated to bring about a constitutional change.”

“Rather we will go for an in-house change. It’s a number game in parliament to bring a no-confidence motion against the prime minister. When we will have the required number we will go for it,” Khawaja Asif added. To a question about the possibility of PML-N ‘merger’ with the PML-Q in this regard, he said it was out of question, hastening to add there could be a possibility of “cooperation” between the two leagues, however, over the issue (of bringing no-confidence move against the prime minister). “We are ready to show flexibility for democracy and national interest,” he said.

The PML-Q and PML-Functional have already announced a merger of the factions.

PML-Q senior vice-president Senator Wasim Sajjad said his party would not be part of any unconstitutional move to topple the present set up. “The present government should complete its tenure. We are also not in favour of supporting a no-confidence motion against PM Gilani,” he said.

About unification of PML-N and Q, Senator Sajjad said: “We have personal contacts with the N leaders, however, there are efforts under way for the merger.”

Premier’s son MPA Abdul Qadir Gilani told Dawn the PPP was ready to face any such challenge. “Governments come and go. We accept the challenges with an open heart,” he said.

Junior Gilani said since Mian Nawaz Sharif had clarified that he would not support any unconstitutional change, the PPP was not worried.

PML-N vows to defend democracy

LAHORE: After Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s speech in Lahore on Saturday, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has made a final decision to adopt a stern stand to defend democracy.

A strategy has been crafted to present the party’s point of view in the sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate starting on Monday (today) on issues such as the government’s performance, help to flood survivors, and Indian atrocities in disputed Kashmir.

Nawaz Sharif chaired a special meeting of the party leadership held at his Raiwind estate on Saturday. Attendees included central and provincial leaders of the party, including Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Senator Parvez Rashid and Khawja Saad Rafiq.

The meeting had detailed consultations on the present political situation. Three adjournment motions submitted by the party in the National Assembly also figured in the discussions and a strategy was devised on how the party MPs will tackle issues in the Parliament.

The meeting decided that if democracy is threatened, the PML-N should be the first to come out into the field and face whatever the circumstances. A clear-cut stand will be taken on the Kashmir situation and voice will be raised in the parliament in support of the Kashmiri protesters, the party resolved.

Sharif told the meeting that his party had no differences with the federal government and if any threat to democracy emerged, the PML-N would be the first to put up defence for it. He added that the federal government should also take decisions according to the desires of the federation, respect institutions, including the judiciary, in order to bolster democracy.

Benazir Bhutto monument provokes anger in Pakistan

Mrs Bhutto, a former prime minister of Pakistan and member of one of the country's most powerful families, was assassinated in a suicide attack in December 2007. Asif Ali Zardari, her husband, is now president, and the 10-acre park and library complex in her name received approval at the start of the month.

The monument has been more than two years in the planning and had already attracted the ire of political opponents and campaigners before the floods. The government has estimated that the floods have caused damage of $43 billion.

Kamran Shafi, a former press secretary to Mrs Bhutto and columnist for Dawn newspaper, has led the call to scrap the project. "It looks extremely bad when so many people are without medicine or homes," he said. "The idea is silly."

Mr Zardari has been accused of politicising relief efforts after his ruling Pakistan People's Party suggesting building new towns for flood victims to be named Benazirabad.

Plans for two monuments – one in Rawalpindi on the assassination site and one in Islamabad – have already survived a legal challenge, which argued that Mrs Bhutto should not be considered a "national hero".

A thousand people a day are signing an online petition urging the monument money be spent on flood relief instead. It says: "Our priority should be our people who are suffering, and we are almost sure that our former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, who loved this country and its people, would also agree."

Farhatullah Babar, the president's spokesman, defended the project. "Benazir Bhutto was the twice elected prime minister of Pakistan and she did so much for democracy and human rights that it is only fitting a memorial is built in her honour," he said.

"The design has been approved but so far no funds have been released. The committee will now consider what to do in light of the floods,” he added.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that Pervez Musharraf being a Pakistani can return home at any time adding that there has been no reality in the news item that "I have written a letter to Pervez Musharraf".

Talking to media here on Thursday, he stated that former president Pervez Musharraf should return to Pakistan and face the cases against him as "we are also facing the cases against us in the court".

Regarding plot to kill Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif Rehman Malik said that he is in touch with the registrars of the four provincial high courts so that a Judicial Commission should be set up for Inquiry.

He said that security of judges has been doubled after this threat and anyone who has prepared this plot action would be taken against them.

He also said that the government has been endeavoring to formulate an act to shun election violations adding that the government has already suggested to ban display of arms in the premises of polling stations and rangers should be deputed at the polling stations to ensure transparency in the elections and by-elections should be held under SOP, Rehman Malik maintained.

Interior Minister also informed that during his meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, he has demanded to take action against Barhamdagh Bughti, who has reported to be present in Afghanistan.

Interior Minister also stated that there has been a report related to inflow of terrorists' elements and arms from Afghan area 'Kuntar' inside Pakistan and in this connection Pakistan has informed with its concerns to Afghan President.
He also emphasized that the federal government would fully cooperate with the Election Commission to provide security on by-elections.

No one to be allowed to use delaying tactics: Nawaz

Lahore—PML-N Quaid Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has said that the distressed flood-stricken people cannot be left at the mercy of any department and no department would be allowed to use delaying tactics in the relief measures for political motives.

“If NADRA did not improve its performance, some alternative arrangement would be considered,” Nawaz said while chairing a meeting here Wednesday in which various proposals with regard to setting up model villages in flood-hit areas and provision of financial assistance to the affectees were considered.

Nawaz said: “We had faced such natural calamity in 1992 and had distributed financial assistance in a transparent manner in the flood-affectees while NADRA did not exist at that time.”

Opposition leader Ch. Nisar Ali urged NADRA to review its performance and ensure distribution of cards by October 20. He said that NADRA is not a personal property of any one.

During the meeting, office-bearers and parliamentarians belonging to PML-N lodged complaints against NADRA regarding distribution of financial assistance in the flood-hit areas. The elected representatives of Mianwali said that the officials of NADRA do not cooperate with the people without giving any reason. Likewise the widows and heads of families are not being acknowledged and new national identity cards are not being issued in place of CNICs lost during flood.

The leadership of PML-N took serious notice of this situation and said that the lethargy and inaptness of NADRA would not be allowed to create hurdle in the way of rehabilitation of flood affectees.

Director General NADRA Punjab, Iqbal Tiwana, who also attended the meeting, said he will improve the performance of NADRA.

Chief Minister Punjab, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Ch. Nisar Ali Khan, Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Senior Advisor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, Members National and Provincial Assemblies, Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning & Development, Senior Member Board of Revenue and architects attended the meeting.

Quaid PML-N Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif said that such a system should be adopted for provision of financial assistance to the flood affectees as a result of which not only financial assistance could be provided to them on-time but they should also not face any difficulty.

He said that no stone should be left unturned for provision of all facilities to the families displaced due to flood. He said that committees headed by DCOs should be constituted to supervise the process of distribution of relief amounts in the affected districts and a programme should be chalked out at village level for distribution of these amounts and flood affectees should be informed about the plan evolved with regard to distribution of this aid.

Nawaz said that transport should also be arranged for bringing the flood-affectees at NADRA centers for getting financial assistance. He said that provincial ministers should be deputed to review the distribution of financial aid in the affected districts and these Ministers should personally supervise the process of distribution of these amounts in their respective areas. He said that it is also right of the provinces to review this fact that whether the distribution work of financial assistance is being carried out satisfactorily or otherwise as provincial governments are also giving 50 per cent share of financial assistance.

Regarding setting up of model villages in flood-hit areas, Nawaz Sharif said that such villages should be constructed for affectees with houses and all basic amenities.

Islamabad, Sep 16(ANI): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has invited public ire over plans to build a Rs.900million memorial for his late wife, Benazir Bhutto.

Benazir, a former Prime Minister, was assassinated in December 2007.

The 10-acre park and library complex was approved last month, but it has provoked anger in Pakistan. People are demanding that the Rs.900million cost for the project should be diverted to help the flood victims.

The monument has been in the pipeline for over two years, and has also attracted the ire of political opponents and campaigners before the floods.

A thousand people a day are signing an online petition urging the monument money be spent on flood relief instead.

"Our priority should be our people who are suffering, and we are almost sure that our former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, who loved this country and its people, would also agree," The Telegraph quoted the online petition, as saying. (ANI)
