WASHINGTON: The UN envoy to Afghanistan, Kai Eide, will step down when his mission ends in March 2010.
“This is not a question of resignation. Kai Eide is sticking to the timetable that he outlined when he took the job in March 2008,” spokesman Farhan Haq said at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Eide, a Norwegian diplomat, has asked United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to start the process of identifying his successor.
“This confirms his intention not to renew his contract which expires in March 2010,” the spokesman added.
Eide’s tenure was tarnished by allegations from his American deputy, Peter Galbraith, that he was not bullish enough in curbing fraud in the August presidential election, which eventually awarded a second term to Hamid Karzai. Eide had denied the charge........
