PM orders 10pc job quota for women

NOWSHERA VIRKAN: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has directed all departments to ensure the implementation of the 10 percent employment quota for women.

Addressing the ground-breaking ceremony of Rs 82.311 million Nowshera Virkan inter-change project on Sunday, he said the PPP government would leave no stone unturned to empower the masses in all walks of life.

Gilani said the wish of Benazir Bhutto had been realised with the restoration of democracy in the country and “we have been successful to some extent to provide solace to her departed soul through such initiatives”.

He said the people were the basis of power under the vision of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.

“The country will prosper only if the people flourish in their enterprises,” he said. Gilani said such a huge gathering and enthusiasm of the people had strengthened his belief that the blood of the martyred leadership would not go to waste.

The prime minister said a land lord, an affluent or a poor man each had one vote, and the poor would bring a revolution through their votes. Recalling the PPP’s services for the country, he said, “The PPP has given the country a constitution and the 18th Amendment and strengthened institutions, including parliament and the judiciary.” Enumerating pro-people initiatives of the PPP government, Gilani said the government had lifted the ban from student, as well as labour unions in the country, and given 50 percent raise in the salaries.

About the government’s steps to strengthen the federation, he said the “PPP has given the NFC Award to the nation, empowered the people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), as well as women in the country”. He said the PPP government had started several schemes, including the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to end the deprivation among the less privileged masses of the country.

“The PPP government is considering introducing health-insurance and provide free electricity and gas units to the poor strata of society,” he added.

The prime minister said technical education training would be imparted to the poor masses in order to enable them to earn their livelihood through skill learning. “PPP government will soon succeed in launching three and five marla residential schemes for the poor in the country,” the premier added.

Gilani directed the Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to upgrade the Nowshehra Virkan grid-station. He also directed to develop a playground for the youth of the area. Gilani also inaugurated a natural gas project in the town. app

Third-time PM bar to go, says Gilani

GWADAR: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has reiterated his government’s resolve to restore the 1973 Constitution in its original form and vowed to do away with the restriction on a person becoming prime minister for the third time.

Speaking at a ceremony held here on Wednesday for the signing of the 7th NFC Award, the prime minister said that constitutional amendments made by dictators would be scrapped.

He said those who violated the Constitution needed to be punished. The prime minister said he wanted strengthening of institutions, not of individuals.

He said the 17th Amendment and Article 58(2)b would be removed from the Constitution and a constitutional committee was working in this regard.

He said Nawab Akbar Bugti was a great supporter of the federation and had worked with the Quaid-i-Azam and those responsible for his murder must be prosecuted.

The prime minister termed the announcement of a consensus NFC award a “dividend of democracy” and reflection of the commitment of the nation to strengthen the federation. He said democracy had achieved something which a dictatorship could never do.

He said the ’73 Constitution was an achievement of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and it strengthened the federation.

He said the government believed in working in cooperation with smaller provinces and the efforts of years of neglect would be addressed on a priority basis. He said the provinces would get political and financial autonomy.

The prime minister said the Gwadar port would usher in an era of progress and prosperity for Balochistan.

Mr Gilani said he wanted to set up a National Vocational and Technical Education centre in Gwadar to train local people who would be given preference in all jobs.

He said the educational requirement for appointment in Coast Guards would be lowered to the middle level to enable more local people to get jobs.

The prime minister announced that 20,000 jobs would be given to people of Balochistan which would help alleviate poverty and empower local people.

He said work on an international airport in Gwadar would be completed on schedule.

He said the port on Gwadar would succeed only if it was connected to the rest of the country and the finance minister should expedite release of funds for the purpose.

He called for speeding up work for import of 110 megawatts from Iran. He announced that a girls college with a hostel would be built in Gwadar.

He asked the chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme to visit the area and ensure that deserving people had access to the scheme. The minister for overseas Pakistanis announced that his ministry would fund the setting up of a school in Gwadar.
