Aamir Khan  PK, 3 Idiots and Dhoom3 climbed to the top two slots, bringing SRK’s Happy New Year and Chennai Express to number four and five, reported Daily News and Analysis (DNA).

Aamir Khan has now replaced Shahrukh Khan in the top five international Bollywood grossers list as his three hits PK, Dhoom 3 and 3 Idiots climbed. Though Shahrukh Khan’s films dominate local as well as international markets and earned a lot grosser but as compare to Amir Khan, it’s comparatively less.

Not only that, Amir’s PK became the talk of the town , many criticism been raised to the films a, the critics left no room to in discouraging the content and script but the general public the real deciders took the film to touch  seventh sky.

Film trade analysts and critics also weighed in their comments on Aamir and Shahrukh’s films:

"There's a tough fight between Shah Rukh and Aamir in the overseas territory. Besides star-power, it's also about the film and its content. As of now, yes Aamir is having a dream run. But SRK is also a huge pull. PK is highly accepted overseas and  became the first Hindi film to collect about INR340 crore at the domestic box-office. His previous films Dhoom 3 (an established brand) and Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots are also known for their sky-rocketing business. Though Happy New Year did very well, it didn't match the kind of numbers one has of an SRK film. It did lesser than Chennai Express. Aamir's Dhoom 3 and now PK have done put him in a great position."

Komal Nahta: The figures speak for themselves; "Out of the top five grossers overseas, three are Aamir's movies. The figures speak for themselves and Aamir's ranking in the overseas market. I think like the audience in India, even the audience abroad has started looking at Aamir's movies to be like an ISI mark. They associate his movies with quality and novelty. PML-N vows to defend democracy

LAHORE: After Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s speech in Lahore on Saturday, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has made a final decision to adopt a stern stand to defend democracy.

A strategy has been crafted to present the party’s point of view in the sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate starting on Monday (today) on issues such as the government’s performance, help to flood survivors, and Indian atrocities in disputed Kashmir.

Nawaz Sharif chaired a special meeting of the party leadership held at his Raiwind estate on Saturday. Attendees included central and provincial leaders of the party, including Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Senator Parvez Rashid and Khawja Saad Rafiq.

The meeting had detailed consultations on the present political situation. Three adjournment motions submitted by the party in the National Assembly also figured in the discussions and a strategy was devised on how the party MPs will tackle issues in the Parliament.

The meeting decided that if democracy is threatened, the PML-N should be the first to come out into the field and face whatever the circumstances. A clear-cut stand will be taken on the Kashmir situation and voice will be raised in the parliament in support of the Kashmiri protesters, the party resolved.

Sharif told the meeting that his party had no differences with the federal government and if any threat to democracy emerged, the PML-N would be the first to put up defence for it. He added that the federal government should also take decisions according to the desires of the federation, respect institutions, including the judiciary, in order to bolster democracy.

SHC hears appeal of convicts in Musharraf case

The counsel for the convicts in a case pertaining to the conspiracy to kill former president Pervez Musharraf contended that the confessional statements of the appellants could not be used against them for conviction as the same was not corroborated by the prosecution with other evidence.

An anti-terrorism court in Karachi had in 2008 found Mohammad Imran, Haneef and Mohammad Ashraf guilty of hatching a conspiracy to kill the then president, Pervez Musharaf, and sentenced them to an aggregate 35 years in prison.

The court, however, had acquitted Sharib Arsalan Farooqui, Mohammad Jameel and Waseem Akhtar, co-accused in the same case, as the charge against them could not be proved by the prosecution.

The prosecution alleged that the accused, who had been against the Musharraf government’s policies on Afghanistan and Kashmir after 9/11, planned to assassinate him and fitted an explosive to a vehicle at Shahra-e-Faisal in Karachi to blow the convoy of the former president on April 26, 2002, but failed to achieve their objective.

The appellants’ counsel, Abdul Waheed Katpar, contended that the confessional statements of Imran, Hanif and Ashraf were neither obtained voluntarily nor were they conducted by the judicial magistrate in accordance with the law and dictum laid down by the superior courts, submitting that they could not be used against them for conviction as the same were not corroborated by the prosecution with other evidence.

The counsel also said that the appellants retracted from their statements in the trial court and such statements could not be pressed into service of conviction until they were corroborated in material particulars apart from confessional statements.

He submitted that no offence under the charge of conspiracy was made out.

He said that the prosecution’s case was of no evidence, and the conviction was unsubstantial. The SHC’s division bench, headed by Justice Shahid Anwar Bajwa, adjourned the hearing till July 26.

UN rejects govt stance on Benazir report

UNITED NATIONS: The UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, rejected on Monday the Pakistan government’s position on the Benazir Bhutto Inquiry Commission report, saying that “the work of the commission is complete.

In a letter delivered to Pakistan’s permanent mission to the United Nations, the UN chief “reiterated his strong support for the commission and stated that the commission carried out its work professionally in fulfilment of the Terms of Reference agreed between the government of Pakistan and the secretariat and noted by the Security Council”.

The UN Chief said “the report speaks for itself and can be helpful to any subsequent investigations”.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had questioned the “credibility and reliability” of the report and said that “the lack of source attribution leads to vagueness and ambiguity in some parts of the report which has undermined its credibility as a fact-finding report”.

Mr Ban asserted in the letter that “the terms of reference of the commission called for the commission to conduct an inquiry into the facts and circumstances of the assassination of Ms Bhutto”.

“The report painstakingly sets out the facts regarding the assassination and provides an extensive description of the circumstances around the crime,” he said.

The UN spokesman said in a statement: “The secretary-general has full confidence in the committee’s judgment. He believes that the report produced by the commission speaks for itself and can be helpful to any subsequent investigation.”

In his letter Mr Qureshi mentioned, among other things, lack of attention paid to any international dimension of the Dec 27, 2007, killing of the former prime minister.

Pakistan needs officers like Leghari: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD – PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif, Sunday, took serious exception to the PPP-led government’s “coercive and intimidating tactics” against the HEC Chairman Dr Javed Leghari and warned that any attempt to destabilise and undermine the democratic order would meet an irresistible opposition that would ultimately frustrate the government’s conspiracies.
“I warn the government to refrain from its threatening conduct against a dutiful officer who has set examples of truthful working in evaluating academic degrees of lawmakers that ought to be emulated by all government officials in discharge of their duties”, PML-N Chief said in a statement issued on Sunday.

He said his party was fully alive to the situation and would in no way allow the government to manipulate wrong from the process. Nawaz Sharif was of the view that the way the PPP-led government was using coercive tactics against the HEC chairman speaks high of the vested interests that wanted the HEC serve in the degree assessment process.
He pointed out that the arrest and release of Dr Javed Leghari’s brother Farooq Leghari and attempt to assault his village in Sindh only exposed the government’s designs of exploiting the process to serve vested interests of the government “I understand Mr Javed Leghari has set higher standards of truthful professionalism in refusing to accept the government dictates and work on merit and worthy dispensation alone”, Sharif added. Pakistan, the PML-N chief said, needed officers like Javed Legahri in striking a balance between commendable conduct and wrongdoing for which he deserves the highest praise.
He advised the government to shun its behaviour that points out to deriving certain nefarious political designs out of the degree evaluation process.

UN report on Benazir

THE government’s reaction to the report of the United Nations Commission on Ms Benazir Bhutto’s murder, as expressed in a letter to the UN Secretary General, is surprisingly negative considering that the PPP had virtually based its post-murder election campaign on the holding of a UN enquiry into the murder. The President himself, who had been made a widower by the murder, had called for the UN enquiry. The enquiry itself, by a Commission headed by Chiles former UN ambassador Geraldo Munoz, was obtained only after great effort and with the country bearing all the expenses.

Just because the Commission did not play the role of an echo chamber, and reflect the government’s views, should not be the reason for such a rejection. The reasons given all reflect precisely the findings of the Commission that caused the greatest controversy when the report was made. The Foreign Minister’s letter defends the official agencies which the Commission had pointed at, including the intelligence agencies, as well as the PPP individuals responsible for Ms Bhutto’s security, including those who have not just been included in the Federal Cabinet, but are characterised as being virtual representatives of the President.
Another reason given for the rejection of the report, implied by the strong criticism of the report by the Foreign Minister, is the Commission’s failure to question foreign heads of state, including Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The letter also says that Pakistan refuses to be bound by any of the Commission’s findings. The only states with an animus against Pakistan sufficient to use the findings against it are India and the USA, both of which are unduly favoured by the present

government.
Before sending the letter, the PPP should have thought about its next step, now that its main plank in the 2009 election turned out to be a damp squib. If the Commission report does not lead to the arrest of the guilty, then what will. And that too with the PPP in power?

Nawaz calls for US participation in APC

ISLAMABAD, (SANA): Leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Mian Muhammad Nawaz has said that US will have to be made part of All Parties’ Conference (APC) to eradicate the menace of terrorism once for all.

He said this while talking to a private TV channel, and said that that President Asif Ali Zardari was the mastermind behind many conspiracies including declaring me ineligible, toppling Shahbaz’s government by imposing Governor Rule.

He went on to say that President Zardari was not in the favour of judges’ reinstatement.

In an interview, Nawaz said Zardari had good intentions in beginning, but it got worse with the passage of time.

He said that no doubt he had political differences with Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, but no personal grudges with her.

He admitted that he made a grave mistake by designating General Pervaiz Musharraf as a Chief of Army Staff.

He also disclosed that approximately 3 trillion rupees are going to dog in terms of corruption.

Nawaz blames Zardari for his disqualification

LAHORE: Chief of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has blamed that the President Zardari was involved in his disqualification and in the suspension of Shahbaz Sharif government, said sources Tuesday.

While talking in a TV interview, PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif said that President’s Zardari’s intention was good in the beginning but later on he changed his mind since he did not want the judiciary to be restored.

Nawaz Sharif cleared the fact that he just had a political conflict with Benazir Bhutto but no personal enmity.

He further said that his biggest mistake was to appoint General Pervez Musharraf (R) as the Chief of Army Staff.

“The army is in a state of war. If it has any objection with the Kerry-Lugar Bill, it should discuss it with the government,” said Nawaz Sharif.

Govt not planning any curbs on media: Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Monday that the government is not planning to introduce any new restrictions on the media. Responding to a question at a press conference, Kaira said that a draft bill currently under discussion in the National Assembly’s standing committee was meant to do away with the amendments introduced by former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf. He said some of the Musharraf-era amendments had already been removed by the parliament, while the rest would be ratified through the proposed bill. staff report

PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif’s call for a national conference to evolve a strategy on combating terrorism and Prime Minister Gilani’s endorsement of the proposal have come not a moment too soon.

The Data Darbar tragedy in Lahore has underscored a grim reality: the militants are not only at war with the Pakistani state, they are bent upon subjugating the Pakistani people as well. Security installations, government buildings, mosques, schools, shrines, hospitals and markets, all have been attacked. With this blurring of targets, there is also a need to realise that, whatever their nomenclature, ideology, agenda and area of operation, the militants must now be seen in holistic terms — and their tactics unanimously condemned. This should be the thought behind the attempt to form a consensus on a strategy to curb terrorism. True, there will always be differences of opinion between those whose religious inclinations find resonance in the ideology espoused by the militants and others who believe that faith is a private affair and should be kept out of the national discourse.

But that is a debate that will have to run its course as the Pakistani nation attempts to resolve a crisis of identity that has dogged it almost since the time of independence. What is not a matter of debate is that the terrorists are prepared to stop at nothing to destroy the state and inflict their obscurantist agenda on the people.

So when the national conference takes place — and one hopes that all stakeholders will be on board and that the meeting will include not only representatives of political parties — it should be with the realisation that there is a common goal to pursue. There should be no room for blame-games or fiery speeches. Serious discussions will be required, with informed input from all concerned, so that a workable plan to thwart militancy can be put in place. Such a plan would include suggestions on how to prepare the people to take on those who threaten their way of life.

We have the example of Malakand division. Soon after the army launched an operation there in April 2009, an all-parties conference more or less unanimously backed the military action. Such political support, combined with the public’s backing, was instrumental in the army’s success in flushing out militants from the area. It will be a long-drawn-out struggle against the militants who will no doubt strike again in an attempt to demoralise the public. But given similar consensus, there is no reason why terrorism cannot be eradicated from larger swathes of Pakistan.

Johnson ruled out of England ODIs

Josh Hazlewood, the teenage fast bowler, has been catapulted into Australia`s one-day squad after Mitchell Johnson was ruled out of the series in England with an elbow infection. Australia are hopeful Johnson will be fit for the two Tests against Pakistan that follow the limited-overs portion of the tour.

"Mitchell had an infected right elbow during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, which had resolved towards the end of the tournament," Alex Kountouris, the team physio, said. "Since returning to Australia he has had a flare-up of the condition and is currently being treated for it.

"As part of the treatment he requires specialist medical management over the coming weeks and as such he`s been ruled out of the six ODIs against Ireland and England. It is hoped that he will make a full recovery in time to join the tour and take part in the Twenty20 internationals and the Test series against Pakistan in England."

Johnson has had his right arm tattooed since the Australian summer, but it is unclear whether that had anything to do with the infection. His absence could open the door for Australia`s youngest ever one-day international debutant, as Hazlewood doesn`t turn 20 until next January.

The only two men to have played ODIs for Australia at 19 are Ray Bright and Craig McDermott, but if Hazlewood debuts on this trip he will beat them by roughly three months. Although his one-day form for New South Wales has been solid rather than brilliant, Hazlewood was a standout in Australia`s Under-19 World Cup-winning side this year and has been marked down as a star of the future.

"Josh Hazlewood has been identified as one of a crop of young fast bowlers who the national selection panel consider can impact for Australia at international level," Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. "He will be well suited to English conditions and this provides a great opportunity for him to be part of the Australian setup on a tour of Ireland and England. We are sure if he gets an opportunity he will perform very well."

The Australians fly out on Friday for their tour of the British Isles, which begins with a one-day international against Ireland in Dublin next Thursday. That is followed by five ODIs against England, two Twenty20s with Pakistan and two Tests against Pakistan. Click here more cricket new

Zimbabwe headed in the right direction - Taylor

Zimbabwe have taken major steps towards regaining their position in the cricketing hierarchy, of challengers capable of toppling the best sides on their day, and Brendan Taylor who has been at the forefront of the turnaround, has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Zimbabwean cause.

"Zimbabwe is my home and it is good place to be in right now," Taylor told DNA. "I want to support Zimbabwe cricket as much as I can. We`re training hard and trying to give our best to play against Australia, India and Sri Lanka. Hopefully by next year, we will get our Test status back and things here will be normal soon.

"We feel the first class structure in Zimbabwe is heading in the right direction. It`s run professionally and we just hope it continues the same way. We have got five teams at the moment and we`re trying to give exposure to the youngsters," he said.

Zimbabwe`s trough in world cricket coincided with the political upheaval in the country which drove several of their leading players away. Taylor was one of the few white cricketers who stuck with the team through the tough phase and spearheaded a few upsets during his time.

"Beating Australia (in the first World Twenty20) was a very special moment. They were the world champions at that stage. The last-ball six against Bangladesh in 2006 which gave us series win. It was the closest game I`ve ever played in," he said.

Taylor top-scored in each of Zimbabwe`s three victories in the ongoing tri-series, getting a century and two fifties in the process. He almost single-handedly derailed India`s campaign - an outcome even he is surprised by. "I love Indian cricketers and follow them closely. The present side is slightly out of form. We`re surprised that they have left their main players out. But the current side has some quality cricketers. I`m really surprised that they are out of the tournament."

India and Sri Lanka may have sent depleted sides for the series, and while Taylor admits it made his side compete better, it would have been a good learning experience for Zimbabwe to face full-strength opposition. "That`s [strength of the other teams] not in our hands but I feel a lot happy that India have not fielded their best team. They would have made our task much harder.

"At the same time, I would have liked them to be here. It would have been a good experience for us. I have immense respect for players like Yuvraj, Dhoni and Sachin. But we enjoyed playing against the current team. We learnt a lot," he said.

With his recent exploits, Taylor has his sights set on impressing the IPL talent scouts, and if things go his way, he may follow Tatenda Taibu to the lucrative Twenty20 league. "Certainly, every cricketer`s dream is to be a part of the IPL. I know there are two new teams from this year and I have my aspirations to play in the IPL. A few more good performances and I know I can get an IPL contract. It`s my aim to be part of such a well-established tournament," Taylor said. Click here to read more cricket news.
